![]() ![]() ![]() Halloween 3 has a very messed up ending, but because we don't see what happens, we're kinda ambivalent towards it. If the original Dawn of the Dead had the original scripted ending where none of the main characters survive, I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. It depends on if I take the film "seriously" (in terms of horror movie expectations and if I'm actually invested in the characters). It was a situation where survival was high and they didn't had to resort to nonsense just to give it a bad ending on purpose. The movie version of Cujo has a good ending unlike the book, and it feels rewarding, effort was paid off. But there is no salvation coming 30 seconds later. Meanwhile, there is The Descent, where the main character is also in a hopeless situation. It's like the director flipped the bird and just said "Haha, screw you". This is a bad ending as in badly written. Then, like 30 seconds later they reveal that the noise is the military and they have beaten the monsters already. The Mist, for example, near the end the father, his son and an elderly couple are stranded and hear a noise and think the monsters are coming, so the father kill the son and the elderly to spare them. Of course, there are bad bad endings that do ruin the experience and feel like a cop out. It wanted to be a satire, but it’s what Fox News talking heads think satires should be. And it’s not a bad film, but that’s such a weird old man shouting at clouds fantasy, it’s so mean spirited, and it’s so hard to work out who your audience for that message actually is…that yeah, it sours the film. Or another recent horror, where the twist ending, and whole text of the film is: millennials (or maybe gen z, I’m bad at these labels), are shallow, dumb, hateful, and they’d all kill each other for no reason if the lights went out. There was a recent film that had a twist ending that (intentionally or not) proved the antivaxxers were right, it came out during the pandemic, and that’s downright irresponsible. I’m not going to name names here, to avoid spoilers, but if you’ve seen them you’ll know: On the other hand, an ending can change the meaning of everything that came before, whether intentionally, or unintentionally, and if it that new meaning is unpleasant or mean spirited, it’s hard to look beyond that when looking at the film as a whole. We welcome creativity and specificity.A good film can have a weak ending and still be a good film, just slightly unsatisfying.
